The death of a loved one is something we all have to face sooner or later and not one of us can escape from it. Even though everyone is going to experience it eventually, it’s often a topic of discussion that just doesn’t come up – burial or cremation, which is better?

Hopefully, your loved one has a will or has made their choice known to you before passing. Having a will is paramount to ensure that your final wishes are followed. If you haven’t got a will, then this is something you should create because it may prove to be invaluable after you pass.

If you’ve never taken the time to ponder whether you want cremation or a burial then here are a few advantages and disadvantages to consider about cremation to help you along.

Advantages of Cremation

  • The thought of cremation sounds gruesome to many, but there are advantages to being turned to ashes. First of all, the cost is far less than that of burial. This makes it a viable option for families without the financial means to bury their loved ones.
  • Ashes are stored in an urn, and they can be taken home, stored, or scattered where the deceased has requested.
  • Being cremated wastes fewer resources than a burial.
  • Funeral services or memorials can be held later, allowing friends and family to arrive from far away. Loved ones can gather at a time that works for everyone.
  • No plot or land fees.
  • One or more family members or friends of the deceased can literally keep a part of the deceased with them indefinitely.

    Disadvantages of Cremation

    • A cremation does not allow for a permanent installation for memorial and mourning. It also does not allow for a fixed location so others can pay their respects whenever they please.
    • Cremations are frowned upon in some religious circles by the church.
    • Crematoriums release a considerable amount of CO2 and pollution into the atmosphere.

Despite all of these obvious benefits, there will always be people who feel that cremation is wrong or that it does not allow them to mourn like they feel it should. There is nothing wrong with feeling this way. Choosing cremation or burial is a personal choice, and it is all about making what you feel is the right choice.  You need to feel comfortable with your decision, as it will help you to come to peace with the situation.
