Repatriation of a loved one for a funeral

Body repatriation is the term used when transferring a person who has passed to their country of origin or citizenship.

When a loved one dies outside of their country of residence, bringing them home for the funeral can seem like a logistical nightmare and complicated situation. Where do you even begin? Were here to help.

We will explain everything you need to know about body repatriation and how the process works, both to and from the country.

Arranging a Body Repatriation

Arranging repatriation can seem daunting, but once youve chosen our repatriation service provider to take care of it, our team will do most of the hard work for you. This can make a difficult time a little easier.

Our funeral director understands that it may take several days to make a decision whether or not to send the person back home for burial. We are able to offer a full service as our experience covers dealing with international customs, documentation, permits, transport, and regulations in accordance with local requirements.

What to do first

Our first priority is to attend to the proper care of the deceased in order to allow you time to make the necessary decisions concerning the repatriation. As soon as possible, we need permission to collect the deceased from the place of death.

Once in our care, and with your permission, we can carry out the embalming of the deceased for repatriation. After embalming, we will ensure the deceased is cared for in a special climate-controlled environment.

Once you have provided us with a copy of the death certificate, we handle the preparation of all other documentation required to repatriate the deceased by air transport. All of the original documentation must accompany the coffin/casket and is inspected by officials in the destination Country in order to clear through customs.

Transporting Ashes

If the repatriation of your loved ones remains is something you and your family decide to do for your loved one, there are several considerations to plan for.

Make sure you check with the airline youre flying with to find out if you can bring the ashes on board as hand luggage, or whether you need to check them in as hold luggage. Lots of airlines prefer you to bring the ashes in a non-metal container so they can be scanned before you board the flight.

At Lee Funeral Home, we have a wide range of coffins and caskets to choose from, many designed especially for international repatriation that conforms to international shipping regulations.
